Stand-up paddle board surfing is a safe and fun hobby for the entire family
Whether you call it stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), paddle surfing, or beach boy surfing, this is one alternative to conventional surfing you and your family do not want to miss.
"Paddle boarding is basically a surfboard with a paddle on," says Bernard Labrosse, owner of Windsure Adventure Watersports. "Just a mode of...well it's the new faith, the new sport!"
For those who have always wanted to try their foot at traditional surfing, but thought it may be difficult to pull-off paddle-boarding may be just the thing you were looking for.
"Anybody can do it," says Labrosse. "From a small child to an elderly. You feel confident because, hey, it's like walking on water."
Not only is SUP safe and environmentally friendly, it could also reap major health benefits as well.
"Basically, the whole idea of stand-up paddling is to get a workout," says Labrosse.
"It's a core exercise."
Surfers are advised to wear wetsuits, sunscreen, and a hat to help protect them against sun damage while riding
If you are like so many others and are looking to try the sport for the first time, experts say that flat, calm water that is free of obstacles - such as boats and buoys - is ideal.
"A smooth ride on the water when it's very hot is a very pleasant experience." ensures Labrosse.
If you live near a lake or are planning a vacation to Vancouver Island this summer, stand-up paddle surfing is an affordable way for families to get out and enjoy the ocean front views.
