Summary

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms beginning Thursday evening.. An upper low pressure system will slowly move across central BC on Thursday then drift into the Prairies by the weekend. Bands of moisture wrapping around this feature will produce heavy rain, particularly on the foothills and eastern slopes of the central and northern Rocky Mountains. Widespread rainfall totals of 40 to 80 mm are expected during the 2 to 3 day period with highest amounts likely near Hudson's Hope, Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge. Recreational areas in higher terrain and Route 97 through Pine Pass could see total rainfall amounts exceed 100 mm. Greater uncertainty exists for urban areas over the Plains such as Fort St. John and Dawson Creek as a slight deviation in the storm track could shift heavy precipitation north or south of major infrastructure. Thunderstorms will also play a large role in the weather this weekend with locally intense downpours, gusty winds and lightning. Rain will taper off by Saturday evening. Key points to be mindful of this weekend... -heavy rainfall will lead to rapid swelling of small creeks and river systems -localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas and over paved surfaces -thunderstorms pose a hazard to outdoor events/recreational activities. Safe places during a thunderstorm include solid buildings with wiring and plumbing or all-metal vehicles with the windows rolled up. ### Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
