Extreme Cold Warning

Issued at 22:41 Wednesday 20 February 2019

Summary

A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected. A frigid airmass combined with moderate to strong northwesterly winds will continue to bring an extended period of wind chills between minus 33 and minus 28 tonight. Conditions will improve Thursday as winds diminish and temperatures rise. ### Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NLstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #NLwx.

Snow Squall Warning

Issued at 22:40 Wednesday 20 February 2019

Summary

Snow squalls are expected. Under the snow squall bands, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow, and snow will quickly accumulate. Snow squalls will continue overnight. Near zero visibility in snow and blowing snow is expected under these squalls. Further snowfall accumulations of 5 to 10 cm are possible in heaviest squalls. Conditions are expected to improve as squalls taper off to scattered flurries Thursday morning. ### Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. Snow squall warnings are issued when bands of snow form that produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NLstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #NLwx.
